ROBERT GLASPER EXPERIMENT @REVOLUTION HALL
まさかポートランドでRobert Glasper Experiment(以下RGX)が見れるとは。
友達を色々誘ってみたけど、誰も一緒に来てくれない。
こんなに素晴らしい人達があり得ない価格でみれるのに、正気ですか？！
Revolution Hallについたのは9時、ちょうど始まる直前。
運良く最後尾のど真ん中に座ることができたけれど、立ち見の人もかなりたくさんいる。
「この隣の席って誰かに取られてる？」
「いえ、取られてないですよ。詰めましょうか？」
「ありがとう！クールね！」
「どういたしまして」
綺麗なお姉さんとさもない会話を交わして気分がいい。
心なしかいい匂いがする気がする。
DJの流す音楽もメロウで心地の良いビート、RGXを聴く準備は整った。
会場が暗転する、突如、ブルース・リーの映像が流れ始める。
ブルース・リーは淡々と語る。
「誰かのマネをするのではない。自分自身を表現するのだ(Express yourself)。。。」
「Yourself....self....self....self....self」
パンチラインのエコーが会場内にリピートされる。そしてメンバーが順番に入場してくる。
最初はドラム、次にベース、ギター、サックス。それぞれがソロを演奏しながら次々とセッションをしていく。
最後にロバート・グラスパーが現れると、会場はより一層沸き立つ。
「水の様になれ」というブルース・リーの言葉の様に、それぞれの奏者が周りのプレイに合わせて即興で演奏を組み立てていく。
次々に展開の変わっていく演奏は、まるで綱渡りのようにギリギリのバランスを保ちながら続いていく。
そして長い長いイントロダクションが終わる。
「Awosome」
ロバート・グラスパーの自画自賛、これが彼のMCのスタイルなのだろう。
「俺らの新しいアルバム、Arts & Scienceは聴いてくれたかい？」
「もちろん、CDやレコードで買ってるだろうな？まさか違法ダウンロードやSpotifyで満足してるやつなんて、、、まじかよ、ひどいやつがいたもんだ！」
「この間なんて、レコード持ってないっていうから聖書やテディベアにサインする羽目になったよ。」
彼は独特のクセのあるMCで会場を巻き込んでいく。
「それじゃあここで、数年前に演奏した曲なんだけど、、、うまくできるかな？」
彼は胸に十字架を切って、天に祈りを捧げた。会場全体がしんと静まった。
長い長いタメのあと、ピアノを引き始めた。
それはどこかで聴いたことのある曲だった、、、確か子供の頃病院のベッドで聴いたような。
そう、それはEnyaの"Wild Child"だった。会場が笑いの渦に包まれる。
「ごめんごめん冗談だよ、じゃあこんなのはどうだい？みんなで歌ってくれよな」
そして始まったのがCyndi Lauperの"Time After Time"だった。
「Sing Along!」の掛け声とともに前列の方から歌う声が聴こえる。
アメリカの人って、シンディ・ローパー歌えるんだ、、、と思いつつ、隣のお兄さんと一緒に笑いながら聴いていた。結局のところ、1番を歌いきるまで続いた。RGXは最後にはもはやピアノを弾くのを止めて会場と一緒に歌っていた。
「ここにいるみんなはRadioheadって知ってるかな？俺はとても好きなんだけど、、、」
と言いながら演奏を始めたのが"Everything In Its Right Place"、僕の大好きな曲だ。
これまでの2曲と違い、RGXによる完璧なアレンジだった。
彼がこの曲を選んで演奏してくれたことに、予想外の場所で大好きな曲に出会えたことに感動を覚える。
彼らの音楽には掴みどころがない部分が多々ある。
例えばジャズをベースにしつつも、ロックのようであり、ポップスでも電子音楽のようであり、R&Bでも、ヒップホップでもある。さらに言えば電子音楽やダンスミュージックの要素も持ちつつ、ときにプログレッシブ・ロックのようでもある。それらを支えるのは圧倒的な技術と、遊び心なのかもしれない。
まるで形にとらわれない、実験的で自由な音楽が会場を虜にしていた。
No way that Robert Glasper Experiment (RGX) can be seen in Portland.
I invited a lot of friends, but no one came with me. (WHY???)
Even though such a wonderful person can see it at a price that is impossible, is it insane? It is!
It took me 9 o'clock just before the beginning of Revolution Hall.
I was able to sit in the middle of the last line, but there were quite a lot of standing guys.
"Is this seat taken?"
"No, You two can sit here . Shall I move?"
"Thank you! Cool!"
"You are welcome."
I felt good by having a conversation with this beautiful girl.
I feel like I have a good smell.
I was Ready to listen to RGX. DJ played comfortable melody as well.
As the venue got dark, suddenly the picture of Bruce Lee started.
Bruce Lee speaks frankly.
"Do not manage someone, express yourself ..."
"Yourself .... self .... self .... self .... self (Phrase echoing)"
The echo of the punch line was repeated in the hall. And the members come in order.
First was drum, then bass, guitar, saxophone. Each one played a solo part and continues a session one after another.
Finally when Robert Grasper appeared, the audiences got even more vigorous.
Like the words of Bruce Lee saying "Like the water", each player improvised and assembled.
They kept the perfect balance like walking on the tightrope while plaing and their performances changed the forms one after another.
And a long long introduction ends.
"Awosome"
Robert Grasper's own self-praising, this is his MC style.
"Did you listen to our new album, Arts & Science?"
"Of course, I guess you are buying it on CDs and records, I guess you are satisfied with illegal downloads or Spotify?"
"In the meantime, because they do not have any records, I got to sign the Bible and the teddy bear."
He involves the venue with a unique MC.
"Well then, it's a song that I played a couple of years ago, can I do it well?"
He cut a cross on his chest and prayed to the sky. The whole venue quietly quieted.
After a long long time he began to play piano.
It was a song that I've heard somewhere ..., It certainly sounds like I heard it in a hospital bed when I was a child.
Yes, that was Enya's "Wild Child". The venue was surrounded by a whirlpool of laughter.
"Sorry sorry, it's a joke, how about this one? Please sing it together."
And it was Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" that started.
I could hear a singing voice from the front row along with a scream of "Sing Along!"
I wondered why almost American people can sing Cindy Lauper, anyway, I was fun and laugh a lot about this situatuion.
After all, he continued to play till I finished singing out verse one.
In the end RGX stopped playing the piano any longer and he was singing with the audience.
"Does everyone here know Radiohead? I like it very much ,,,,"
It was my favorite song "Everything In Its Right Place" that I started playing with the cover song of Radiohead .
Unlike the two previous songs, it was a perfect arrangement by RGX.
I was touched by the fact that he picked up this song and played it, I found a favorite song in an unexpected place.
Their music has many sides of music.
For example, based on jazz, it seems to be rock, pop music like electronic music, R & B, hip hop. In addition to having elements of electronic music and dance music, it is also sometimes like progressive rock. It may be overwhelming skill and playful to support them.
It was as thoughtful as a form of experimental and free music captivating the venue.
